Greetings, friends, members and supporters of our church at Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay, Orere Point, Conifer Grove, Takanini, and in the southern part of Auckland – and beyond.
The Peace of Christ be with you!
Let us Pray
Lord of Hosts,
We give thanks for those special times of celebration in our lives.
Times when we have come together,
with food and joy and laughter.
Times when we have met new friends
or celebrated important moments.
God, giver of all good things,
We celebrate your love and welcome.
In Christ’s name,
AMEN
Cooking Class
On Saturday afternoon I went to a class on how to cook a fish.
A little explanation here – I’ve had reasonable success in catching snapper, but both Sandy and I have often talked about how little of the fish you end up eating if you just eat the fillets.
So the course was focused on how to eat the whole fish. The head for soup, the ‘wings’ baked, and the body of the fish cooked in a kind of Thai sauce. (let me know if you would like the recipes and instructions)
It was quite a fancy cooking class, and I am not sure that I could ever manage to assemble all the ingredients involved, but I am pretty confident that I can adapt the recipes to use when (or if!) I catch a few more fish.
We ate what we cooked, and I have to say that the soup, wings and fish all tasted pretty good.
What is more, we cooked and ate together – I didn’t know anyone else there, but meeting new people and doing these things together was a real highlight.
Cooking and eating in the Bible.
Have you noticed that many of the major events in Scripture happen around the preparation and sharing of food? - for example: the special meal prepared on the night of Passover as the Hebrew people prepared for their great march out of slavery; the Last Supper Jesus shared with his disciples – and the meal on the lakeshore prepared by Jesus for his followers straight after his resurrection.
It was Jesus’s readiness to eat with ‘tax collectors and sinners’ that got him into so much trouble.
The Messianic Banquet
Christians have seen in this prophecy from Isaiah the fulfilment of God’s purposes for all people:
On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.
And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations.
He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.
It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us.
This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” (Isaiah 25:6-9)
Let us Pray
Jesus, you who welcomed sinners and outcasts,
We pray today, for all who feel unwelcomed.
For those who find themselves left out, overlooked or discarded.
Help us, Lord,
to see you in the stranger,
and to know that as we welcome, care for, or visit ‘the least of these’
We discover your presence.
In Christ’s name
AMEN
